“When people get older, they get bitter or get cute.” — Kim Shattuck

Monsieur Rose Poster 1

Where an old boy’s acute frown’s a cute grin upside-down, “Monsieur Rose” turns it around. From France, Philippe Katerine’s art movement – le mignonisme (“the cuteness”) – turns up around his birthday in Pepe’s hometown, when most acute’s his frown.

Avoiding maturity is, for many men, not just a cute hobby, but a life’s work – often handsomely rewarded in the infantile popular culture of the West.

— Michael Leunig

Monsieur Rose Cute as a button Lordly nose

How in the world any one weighing 185 pounds can be cute is beyond me.

—Vaughn Monroe

Monsieur Rose Cute as a poem Ode to prose

When I applied for grad school, I did not specify genre. I said I wanted an MFA in Creative Writing. I was so cute and stupid! The admissions committee decided to put me in poetry.

— Henry Rollins

—Roger Craig Smith

Monsieur Rose Wall art large

Disrespect is tired. Shade is old. Sipping ‘tea’ isn’t cute. But loving, supporting, giving, being grateful and perpetuating light, is.

—Grace Gealey

There are beaucoup images on the web of le mignonisme Montreal, summer 2024, during which the “Monsieur Rose” sculptures inverted frowns in the heart of Pepe’s hometown, his own most acute.

  1. As a kid I listened to Vaughn Monroe’s “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and wondered if ghost riding was really as bad as Vaughn claimed. Firstly, you’re outdoors, plenty of fresh air and you’re riding a horse … in the sky! I can think of worse eternities.
Loved the post to-day. Accolades to Pepe & Cogito

    • I agree with you, George. There must be worse ways for a “Ghost Rider” to spend eternity than in the “Greatest Western Song of All Time.” But it is hard to imagine worse than driving a mighty heard of red-eyed cows, their steel hooves pounding dust, their brands still on fire–forever. Maybe watching “Monsieur Rose” plowing up the ragged skies and through the cloudy draw could be worse. Thank you, Tref.

      • Steel hooves, burning brands. Some of that herd has to wonder, “What the hell did I do to deserve this?”

  3. I cannot imagine an art exhibit like this but I have to concur with Henry Rollins‘ quote.

    • Thank you for your visit and comment, LuAnne.
It seems that you believe, like Henry Rollins, that short poems cannot effect the world positively in a cute way. I have read some of your short poems, and can testify to the contrary. 🙂
